Chapter 9

Maria followed him to the threshold of the door, calling after him in her own defense, “You can never like shoes too much! For your information, fashion is my occupation. I am one of the most well respected women in New York. I have people who aspire just to be in my company!”

“Should I feel blessed?” Jack asked sarcastically.

“Yes, as a matter of fact, you should,” Maria replied with a haughty attitude.

“You know, I think I liked you better when you were in shock from the crash! You were definitely nicer.”

“And you were definitely cleaner!” Maria harrumphed, closing the door behind her and continuing to mumble something. She had entered the house during the verbal exchange without giving a second thought to the dog.

Jack stopped listening, being reminded in startling clarity why he didn’t like people. “You know, we’re still in danger, right? He could come back any minute,” Jack replied, hobbling over to the phone. Of course, the line was dead. Even a heavy wind could knock something loose and stop the phone from working, but this sure was bad timing. Jack swallowed hard, “Hey, Maria…seriously, the phone is dead.” He held out the receiver towards her to make his point.

“What?” Maria said absently at first and then responded when the conversation clicked, “The phone is dead? Wait! No!” She ran towards the phone and yanked the receiver from Jack’s hand. Listening desperately for a dial tone, her eyes bulged from her head and she began to breathe heavily.

Jack put a hand on her shoulder and caught her eyes, “Maria, Maria, you need to calm down. We need deal with our injuries and then we’ll figure out what to do next. You still have a cut on your forehead and it looks like the bleeding may be getting worse. You need to calm down so your blood pressure doesn’t rise. That could start it bleeding hard again and we need that not to happen. ”

“Bleed?” Maria said quietly, almost distantly.

Jack caught her eyes again, “Yes, listen to me. You need to relax. I have a shower in the back of the house. I was serious about that hot water. Go use it and then we can talk.”

She looked up at him, finally connecting with his eyes and he felt better. “I’ll get you a towel and some clean clothes, okay?”

Maria nodded and moved towards the back of the cabin. After placing a fresh towel on the bed, a pair of his old pants and a shirt next to the towel and moved out of the bedroom. The single bedroom was connected to the bathroom and he closed the door to give her as much privacy as he could in the close quarters. Jack had never had company in his cabin before. He now realized just how confining it was with more bodies than just his own and a dog.

“Oh man, boy, you would not believe the day I have had,” Jack said to the dog who was beginning to follow him around as though worried.
